Being a good neighbour – and why it matters

Want to live in a great neighbourhood? It all starts with you! Check out our tips for being a good neighbour and creating a safe, friendly place for everyone.

Everyone deserves to feel safe, comfortable and respected in their home. Living close to other people means that, from time to time, there may be differences in lifestyles, routines and expectations. By being considerate of those around us, we can help create stronger, friendlier communities where everyone can enjoy their home.

How can I be a good neighbour?

  • Keep noise to a reasonable level. If you're planning an event, carrying out DIY or doing anything that may create extra noise, let your neighbours know in advance where possible. Be mindful of noise levels
  • Clean up after your pets. Dog fouling is unpleasant, can pose health risks and is against the law. Please make sure you always clean up after your pets.
  • Keep shared areas tidy. Communal spaces are there for everyone to enjoy. Dispose of litter responsibly, avoid leaving personal belongings in shared areas and be considerate when using communal parking areas.
  • Help children play safely and respectfully. Encourage safe and respectful play. We want our neighbourhoods to be places where everyone can thrive.
  • Welcome new neighbours. Taking a few minutes to introduce yourself can help build positive relationships and create a stronger sense of community.

What if I'm having problems with my neighbour?

Many issues can be resolved through a friendly conversation.

  • Talk to them. A polite discussion can often prevent a small issue from becoming a bigger problem.
  • Make them aware. Your neighbour may not realise their actions are affecting others. Bringing the issue to their attention may help resolve it quickly.
  • Stay calm and respectful. Approaching the conversation in a friendly way is more likely to lead to a positive outcome.
  • Suggest solutions. Offering practical ideas to reduce disruption can help both parties reach an agreement.

If you feel unsafe or uncomfortable approaching your neighbour directly, please contact us for advice and support.
